From the NWS Fort Worth: Bottom Line

A prolonged period of subfreezing temperatures and dangerously cold wind chills will begin today and continue into the Christmas weekend.

Overview

  • A strong cold front is currently moving across Texas bringing below freezing temperatures and gusty northwest winds behind it.
  • Brief freezing drizzle and snow flurries will occur an hour or two behind the front, mainly along and north of the I-20 corridor. This precipitation will be very light and no significant accumulations or impacts to travel are expected.
  • Strong north winds sustained at 25 to 30 mph with peak gusts of 40 to 50 mph are likely.
  • The combination of subfreezing temperatures and windy conditions will result in wind chills falling
  • near or below zero across the entire region tonight into Friday morning.
Conditions will be life threatening for unsheltered or marginally sheltered populations.

There is high confidence temperatures will fall below 10°F along the Red River and across the Big Country Thursday night into Friday morning.

There is a medium chance (40-50%) that temperatures will fall at or below 10°F across the DFW Metroplex and 20% Central Texas.

  • The expected temperatures will likely damage exposed outdoor pipes and other infrastructure.
  • Temperatures may briefly rise above freezing across portions of North and Central Texas on
  • Christmas Eve but will quickly fall below freezing again Saturday evening. Temperatures will climb above freezing Sunday (Christmas) afternoon.
What We are Certain Of:

  • The temperature forecast. Subfreezing temperatures are expected to persist through at least early Christmas Eve, which will impact infrastructure, primarily exposed outdoor pipes.
  • Strong north winds will accompany the front. Sustained winds upwards of 25-30 MPH with gusts of 40 to 50 mph are expected.
  • Light freezing drizzle and snow flurries are likely along and north of the I-20 corridor. No significant accumulations are expected.
  • What We Are Less Certain Of:
  • The areal extent of light freezing drizzle or snow flurries may extend farther south into Central Texas.
