The Texas Senate Economic Development Committee recently convened for its inaugural meeting, chaired by a member who introduced SCR 24. This legislation aims to establish a Texas trade office in Israel, citing the potential benefits due to Israel's advancements in technology and other sectors that align with Texas' economic strengths. The proposed office would be located in Jerusalem and modeled after existing international offices in Mexico and Taiwan.
In other legislative developments, the Senate passed SB 20, which targets AI-generated child pornography. "We must continue to prioritize the safety and wellbeing of our youngest Texans," stated the bill's proponent.
Additionally, SB 25 was unanimously approved by the Senate. This legislation addresses health issues arising from poor nutrition and sedentary lifestyles among students. It mandates daily physical activity for students from PreK through grade eight and introduces nutritional education requirements for high school students.
Efforts to combat unsolicited text messages were also strengthened with SB 140, closing a loophole that allowed telemarketers to send unsolicited texts without restriction.
Regarding border security, the Texas Facilities Commission reported progress on the border wall program, with approximately 56.9 miles completed as of February 20. Construction is ongoing at multiple locations across six counties.
The region faces an elevated fire risk according to a report from the National Weather Service in Fort Worth. Residents are urged to comply with local burn bans to prevent fires that could endanger homes and lives.
